The Story of Sarah Emma Edmonds

Emma Edmonds enlisted in the Union Army disguised as a man - Private Franklin Thompson. She was a true soldier who fought in many battles and served as a male nurse before becoming an incredibly successful Union spy. She was a master of disguise who went behind enemy lines no less than seventeen times without detection. She was the only woman officially recognized by Congress as a Civil War veteran and also the only woman member of the Union veteran organization The Grand Army of the Republic.
